GUNNISON – Western State Colorado University men's basketball team will take on CSU-Pueblo and New Mexico Highlands University this weekend in the Paul Wright Gym. The Mountaineers take on the ThunderWolves Friday at 7:30 p.m., then the Cowboys for the season-finale at 7 p.m. Saturday. Though the team is out of postseason contention, these final two games will be important in possible school records and achievements.

Ben Beauchamp leads the Mountaineers with just over 19 points per game. The junior is second in the conference in scoring by half a point per game. He also is 16th in the conference in field goal percentage, fourth in 3-point percentage and fifth in treys made per game. Beauchamp is looking to become the first Mountaineers since Mountaineer Hall of Fame member Travis Bradley in 2001 to score more than 500 points in a season.

Joining Beauchamp on the conference lists is Will Duggan who is sixth in assists per game with just under four per game. Duggan is averaging nearly 10 points per game and is looking for his second-straight 100 assist season.

Also for the Mountaineers, both Collin Smith and Brady Subart are averaging more than 11 points per game. The duo have combined for nearly 100 3-pointers , and both are Kenny Clay's 1997 free throw percentage season record of .889. Subart is lacking in the required attempts to overtake the record, but Smith is two-hundredths of a percentage above the record.

Western Student Athlete Academic Committee will host a Shoot-For-The-Loot event Friday during halftime. Fans can purchase a Ping-Pong ball for a dollar at the event table, then will attempt to toss their ball into a bucket at halftime. The winner will take home half of the proceeds, while the rest will be donated to the Make-A-Wish foundation. Contestants can buy as many balls as possible.
