MBB | No. 15 Skyhawks nearly upset by Mountaineers

DURANGO, Colo. – Western State Colorado University men's basketball took No. 15 Fort Lewis College into overtime on Saturday night. It was the third time this season the Mountaineers played extra time. Unlike the last time, the Mountaineers were unable to come away with a win, falling to the Skyhawks 93-92.
 
After a Quincy Harding three-point field goal, Western (3-7, 1-3 RMAC) had a one-point lead over FLC (7-1, 4-0 RMAC) with 11 seconds left to play in overtime, 92-91.
 
Harding scored all seven overtime points for the Mountaineers and led the team in scoring on Saturday night with 24 points, while also recording a game-high six assists.
 
The Skyhawks came down the floor and called timeout with six seconds remaining, setting up an out-of-bounds play for the game winner. However, FLC was fouled and Daniel Hernandez went to the line for two free throws with two seconds left. Hernandez made both, giving the Skyhawks a 93-92 win.
 
The Mountaineers came out firing and were ahead 10 points, 17-7, after the first 6:03. However, the FLC offense came storming back and were ahead 41-32 at halftime.
 
In the second half, Western shot 69 percent (20-of-29) from the field to grind their way back into the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup. Brady Subart scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half to give the Mountaineers a boost.
 
With eight seconds remaining in regulation, Hernandez put the Skyhawks in the lead with two free throws.
 
Christian West took the ball coast-to-coast for the Mountaineers, scoring a layup and sending the game into overtime.
 
The Western bench contributed 51 points in the game, led by Michael Hill's 21 points.
 
The Mountaineers were a perfect 12-of-12 from the charity stripe against FLC on Saturday night and shot 50.7 percent (35-of-69) from the field.
 
Western is now 1-2 in overtime games this season.
 
The Mountaineers return home for their next games as they host New Mexico Highlands University at 7:30 p.m. next Friday night in Paul Wright Gym.
