WBB | Western set for Holiday Inn-Airport Thanksgiving Classic

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Western women's basketball team continues their road journey this week. The Mountaineers will play in the Holiday Inn-Airport Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Colorado Mesa University.

On Friday, Western plays Northern New Mexico College before returning to the court on Saturday to face St. Edward's University. Both games are set for a 1 p.m. tip-off.

Fresh off a split at the Seawolf Hoops Classic in Anchorage, Alaska, Western (1-3, 0-0 RMAC) looks to pick up some non-conference wins before moving into the long Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season.

So far in the young season, Western has been paced by the freshman tandem of Katie Dalton and Jessie Erickson. Dalton leads the Mountaineers in scoring at 11.3 points per game while Erickson has pulled down a team-leading 22 rebounds.

Erickson is not the only one to impress on the glass though. Playing in limited minutes, Carra Jackson-Brown has 19 rebounds on the season for a 4.8 average. Overall, the Mountaineers hard play on the glass has turned up nearly 39 rebounds a game giving the Mountaineers valuable opportunities at both ends of the floor.

Versus NNMC (3-6) the Mountaineers face a well-tested team. With a front-loaded schedule, the Eagles are already nine games into their season. The Eagles enter the CMU Holiday Inn-Airport Thanksgiving Classic fresh off a win versus Adams State University. In the game, NNMC put up 86 points to outlast Adams State on the Grizzlies home court. The hot-shooting Eagles play a balanced attack with Cheyenne Cordova and Kayla Salazar leading the way.

On Saturday, Western faces soon-to-be Lonestar Conference member, St. Edwards University (3-2, 0-0 HC). The Hilltoppers are no stranger to the RMAC, having played Colorado Christian and Colorado Mines to start the season. Shooting well behind the arc, St. Edwards is averaging nearly 60 points a game while holding opponents to 54.  A balanced Hilltopper offense has four players averaging over eight points per game. Isabel Hernandez is the leading scorer for St. Edwards, putting up 10 points per game on the season.

If your holiday plans don't allow for a trip to Grand Junction this weekend, you can always catch the live stream or pull up the live stats.
