GOLDEN, Colo. – The Western State Colorado University women's soccer team played to a draw with #6 Colorado School of Mines (CSM) through regulation before succumbing in overtime. The Mountaineers fell to the Orediggers 0-1 in the 97
th minute.
The Mountaineers (4-6-2, 3-4-1 RMAC) weathered a CSM (10-2-1, 7-1-1 RMAC) barrage for 90 minutes behind the split goalkeeping of
Katie Simpson-Johnson and
Emilie Eckhart.
Through the first-half, Simpson-Johnson faced 19 shots and registered seven saves to keep a clean sheet for the Mountaineers. Starting the second-half, Eckhart took over the net-minding duties for the Mountaineers. Like Simpson-Johnson, Eckhart blanked the Orediggers for 52 minutes facing 15 shots and registering six saves.
After three corner kicks in a 90 second span, CSM's Nicole LaTourette got her head on the ball and found the net for the game winner in the 97:50.
In a rough and tumble effort, the Mountaineers garnered four yellow cards while playing an aggressive Mines attack. Six yellows were issued on the day. Facing a tough midfield and frontline that dominated much of possession, Western's defense staved off goals all day as CSM took 34 shots, 15 on goal, in the game.
With the loss, the Mountaineers end the weekend in the Front Range 0-1-1. With four games remaining in the regular season, Western sits in 8
th place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings with an opportunity to make their second consecutive RMAC Tournament.
Western returns to the field at home on Friday in a match versus MSU-Denver before facing RMAC leading Regis University on Sunday.
