FB | Western holds BHSU scoreless in the fourth

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Western State Colorado University football held Black Hills State University scoreless in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, the Yellow Jackets outscored Western 40-0 in the first three quarters.
 
With the fourth quarter shutout Western (0-7, 0-7 RMAC) has now held four opponents scoreless in the final 15 minutes.
 
The Mountaineers passed for 135 yards on Saturday, while holding BHSU (4-3, 4-3 RMAC) to just 115 yards through the air.
 
Western used three quarterbacks to get their 135 yards through the air. Transfer Easton Bruere led the Mountaineer aerial attack, completing 5-of-12 passes for 70 yards. Spencer Shook passed for 38 yards and Garrett Boyd added 27.
 
Rodray Perkins continues his ascent up the career kick return leaderboard. Perkins recorded 63 yards on three returns and now has 1,088 career kick return yards, which ranks second in school history. Only Jimmy Evans (1997-2000) has more yards with 1,393.
 
Perkins also led all players in receiving yards, catching three passes for 46 yards.
 
Western's defense recorded three sacks in the game. Lane Farris, Will Halligan and Mark Zavala each had one sack.
 
Mountaineer defensive lineman Jacob Banegas led all players in tackles with 10.
 
BHSU place kickers Trey Fleming and Jacob Parks combined to go 5-of-6 kicking field goals. Three of the made field goals occurred in the first quarter of the game.
 
Western didn't surrender a touchdown until the 13:26 mark of the second quarter.
 
The Mountaineers return home for next week's game against New Mexico Highlands University. Western will face the Cowboys at 1 p.m. in Mountaineer Bowl.
