MBB | Mountaineers come up short against Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – A repeat of Western State Colorado University's Will Duggan's buzzer beater was almost a possibility Tuesday evening, but Colorado Mesa University held on to for the win at home in a 99-97 game. Western will host Westminster College Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Déjà vu was on the mind of Colorado Mesa University players as Western State Colorado University tied up the game with 40 seconds left after being down by 10 a couple of minutes earlier. The Mavericks' Eimer Lopez got an offensive rebound with 27 seconds left and put the ball back up, but was foul and converted both foul shots. The foul game would continue, until with seven seconds left Mesa fouled Ben Beauchamp to solidify their win.

Beauchamp was on fire once again, scoring 27 points in the loss. This is the first time this season he has scored 20 or more points in three straight games, and has gone at least 27 points in four of the last five games. The junior was eight of 16 from the floor, as well as converting a perfect nine-for-nine from the charity stripe.

Four more Mountaineers jumped into the scoring column with double-digits, all with a dozen or more points. Brady Subart scored 19 points, sinking four of eight treys and dishing out four assists. Collin Smith added 18 points, shooting six of 10 from the field. James Willis also had 13 points in the win and was a perfect five-for-five shooting.

Also for Western, true freshman Monroe Porter came in for the start and put together the most complete game of his career. Porter had 15 points for Western, while also leading the team with five assists and six boards.

For the Mavericks, CJ Davis from deep was the story of the game. The guard sank eight treys, scoring 28 points in the game. He was joined by Lopez with 25.
