GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Western State Colorado University women's soccer fell on the road Sunday to Colorado Mesa University. The Mavericks converted on a penalty kick in the 71^st minute to win the match 1-0.
 
Western (3-4-1, 1-2 RMAC) was unable to overcome CMU (4-3-1, 2-1 RMAC) on the road. The Mavericks outshot the Mountaineers 12-3 on Sunday.
 
After a close played first half, both offenses were on the attack in the second half.  Freshman Andrea Grillo had one of the better opportunities for the Mountaineers. In the 66^th minute, Grillo earned a shot but put it just wide of the target.
 
In the 71^st minute, the center official called a penalty in the box for the Mavericks, resulting in a penalty kick. CMU converted and rode the one goal lead for the final 19 minutes of the match.
 
Western goalie Katie Simpson-Johnson made four saves in the match.
 
Western will continue the season next Friday on the road at Adams State University.
