GUNNISON, Colo. – On Friday, Western State Colorado University women's soccer will head west for a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchups. The Mountaineers travel to Westminster College on Friday before heading back to the Centennial State for a match at Colorado Mesa University.
Â
Western (3-2-1, 1-0 RMAC) started conference play with a 3-1 victory last Sunday over Black Hills State University. The Mountaineers will be looking to make it two RMAC wins in-a-row for only the second time in program history. Western has tied after an RMAC victory six times in the last three seasons.
Â
The Mountaineers have faced Westminster (4-1, 1-0 RMAC) only one previous time. That meeting came last year when the two teams tied 2-2 in Gunnison.
Â
Sunday's matchup will be more familiar for both teams. It will be the seventh matchup between the two programs. The only other team Western has played seven times since the program was established in 2012 is UC-Colorado Springs.
Â
Against CMU (2-3-1, 0-1 RMAC), Western has a record of 2-2-2. In Grand Junction, the Mavericks hold the edge with a record of 1-0-1.
Â
As a team, Western enters the week leading the RMAC in shots attempted with 94. However, the Griffins lead the conference in shots per game with an 8.4 shot average.
Â
CMU's Amanda Wenzel leads the RMAC in average shots per game at 4.0, but Western's
Jessica Kresl (Jr., Aztec, New Mexico) leads the conference in total shots with 21.
Â
Four Mountaineers are tied for the team lead in goals scored.
Andrea Grillo,
Francesca Rand,
Paige Massey and Kresl have each scored two goals this season.
Â
WC's Madison Roemer leads the Griffins in goals scored with three. All three goals have been game winners for WC, which also leads the conference.
Â
For CMU, four players have scored one goal.
