VB | Mountaineers drop two in final non-conference competition

PUEBLO, Colo. – Western State Colorado University suffered two straight defeats and the third of the CSU Pueblo Tournament Friday night and Saturday. The team closed the tournament with a record of 1-3, putting the team at .500 with a 4-4 record.

The Mountaineers came off a five-set win against Nova Southeastern yesterday to take on Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe Adams State University. Western fell in three sets, missing their three-year starter and RMAC Setter of the Week Allison Walker, who suffered a knee injury and missed the Nova game.

Freshman Kitt Campbell and Julianna Waller stepped in at setter, but the Mountaineers weren't meshing right as they fell to Adams in three and No. 3-ranked Wayne State College in straight sets. Campbell game in for 22 assists against Adams and 11 against Wayne State, while Waller added eight assists against Wayne State.

Tori Gaherty led the Mountaineers with nine kills in each match. Joining her against Adams was Kathleen Kasel with five kills, while Jordan Eatwell had five kills against Wayne State.

The defense held strong against Wayne State, as Gaherty and Molly Hothan had four blocks apiece, and Avery Burkholder added three. Amanda Maestas had a dozen digs against the third-ranked team, while she had 11 against Adams State.

Western will look to regroup, as the team hosts Colorado Mesa University Thursday evening and Westminster Friday evening. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
