WBB | Mountaineers push Roadrunners to overtime

GUNNISON, Colo. – Four quarters weren't enough to decide a winner on Friday night between Western State Colorado University women's basketball and Metro State University Denver. The Mountaineers came back from seven down in the fourth quarter to tie MSU Denver, 60-60 as time expired. Unfortunately for Western, the Roadrunners escaped with a win, 77-72.

Western (4-14, 2-14 RMAC) trailed MSU Denver (10-12, 8-8 RMAC) 48-41 with 4:53 remaining in regulation. The Mountaineers continued to chip away at the Roadrunner lead and trailed by two points with 29 seconds left.

A steal and layup by Carra Jackson-Brown (So., Denver, Colorado) tied the game at 58 points with 18 seconds remaining. After two MSU Denver free throws, Western guard Taylor Long (So., Moreno Valley, California) hit a game tying jumper with 12 seconds remaining, forcing overtime.

Long led the Mountaineers in scoring with 26 points, despite making only five field goals. The sophomore scored 14 of her points from the charity stripe. Long also led the team in rebounds with 13 to complete her third double-double of the season.

In overtime, the Mountaineers were unable to rally as the Roadrunners outscored Western 17-12.

Western began the game in the lead as they finished the first 10 minutes ahead of MSU Denver 10-9. The Mountaineers extended their lead to two points by halftime, 25-23.

The Roadrunners would eliminate that lead in the third quarter, taking a 41-35 lead into the fourth.

Friday night was the second overtime game of the season for Western. The Mountaineers fell to Westminster College last weekend in overtime 63-57.

Western had two other players score in double figures on Friday night, Harlie Williams (Jr., Norwood, Colorado) and Sadie Stroup (Jr., Foresthill, California). Williams scored 18 points, making 6-of-10 three-point field goals. Stroup added 12 more on 4-of-11 shooting from the field.

The Mountaineers will return to the court Saturday night when they host UC-Colorado Springs at 5 p.m. in Paul Wright Gym.
