GUNNISON – Western State Colorado University men's basketball team is prepped for a matchup with MSU-Denver and University of Colorado-Colorado Springs this weekend in the Paul Wright Gymnasium. The Mountaineers will battle the Roadrunners Friday at 7:30 p.m., then take on the Cougars at 7 p.m. Saturday.
The Mountaineers (4-17, 3-12 RMAC) are looking to recover from a rough shooting weekend. The team normally averages around eight deep shots made per game, but were held to just three in the game Saturday. Western as a team shoots more than 34 percent from the arc and 43 percent from the field.
Danny Hopkins leads the team in minutes played (32.1), free throws made and attempted (70-90), total rebounds (115), and is second in assists (72). The senior's knowledge also turns into scoring, as he leads the team with 91 made field goals for more than 13 points per game.
Deep shooter Ben Beauchamp is next up in playing time and shooting. He has accounted for more than a third of the team's total made three point shots, averaging more than 38 percent shooting from deep. He also is third on the team in assists and second in steals with 16.
Will Duggan has provided a quick spark for the offense, dishing out a team-high 77 assists, as well as taking away 30 steals.
