WBB | Western starts strong but falls to CCU

GUNNISON, Colo. – Western State Colorado University women's basketball got out to a fast start Saturday night against Colorado Christian University. Unfortunately, the Mountaineers were unable to sustain the lead and fell 68-54 on senior night.
 
Western (4-19, 2-19 RMAC) scored the first seven points of the game and were ahead by as many as eight at the 7:26 mark of the first quarter. The Mountaineers finished the first quarter ahead of CCU (18-7, 15-6 RMAC) 19-16.
 
The Cougars would not be outdone, taking the lead for the first time midway through the second quarter. CCU took a four point lead, 30-26, into halftime.
 
The Mountaineers scored 14 points in both the third and fourth quarters, but were unable to match the Cougars' offensive output.
 
Western senior Taylor Mayes (Sr., Hutchinson, Kansas) played her final game in Paul Wright Gym on Saturday night. Mayes scored five points and grabbed four rebounds in her final collegiate game in Gunnison.
 
CCU had three players score 14 points. Kate Louthan, Ali Meyer and Alex Nelson each contributed 14 points to the Cougars' cause.
 
Harlie Williams (Jr., Norwood, Colorado) led the Mountaineers' scoring attack. Williams scored 13 points, making three three-point field goals and all four free-throw attempts.
 
Western will play their final game of the 2015-16 season next Friday night on the road against Colorado State University – Pueblo.
