GUNNISON – Western State Colorado University men's basketball team heads to the south this weekend to take on No. 10-ranked Fort Lewis College Friday evening, and then take on Adams State University Saturday in Alamosa.

The Mountaineers (4-19, 3-14 RMAC) are looking for their first ranked opponent victory this season. Western State did last defeated Fort Lewis in an 89-85 home victory at the end of last season. The team fell to the Sky Hawks by ten earlier this season.

Senior Danny Hopkins continues to lead the team, averaging more than 13 points per game. He also leads the team with more than five boards per game, is second in assists (78), and has nearly 100 trips to the foul line.

Three other Mountaineers are scoring in double-digits for a well-balanced attack. Ben Beauchamp is a deep threat for the Mountaineers, averaging just under 13 points per game while shooting almost 40 percent from the arc. Down low, senior C.J. Schutt averages just over 10 points per game. He is shooting more than 60 percent from the field and 78 percent from the foul line.

The final double-digit threat for the Mountaineers is Robert Romero. The southpaw forward can score from anywhere on the court for Western, shooting 42 percent from the field and 35 percent from downtown. He is also second on the team with five boards per game.

The Sky Hawks (19-3, 14-3 RMAC) are also a well-balanced team, with four regular players averaging more than 12 points per game. RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, Joshua Blaylock, leads the team with more than 16 points per game. The guard is shooting 53 percent from the field and more than 47 percent from beyond the arc. He also averages four boards per game and three assists.
