MBB | Beauchamp scores 25 as Mountaineers fall short

GUNNISON – Just when the game seemed to get out of hand, Western State Colorado University guards Ben Beauchamp and Will Duggan began lighting up the scoreboard to rally a comeback. Western came from down 17 to just a two point game in the second half, but fell short, 71-75, in a loss to Adams State University Friday evening in Paul Wright Gymnasium.

Beauchamp scored 25 points in the end, shooting four of 11 from deep and nine of 18 from the floor. The guard also led the team with 10 boards, earning himself his first double-double of the season. Duggan was four of eight from deep including another buzzer-beater trey, as well as dishing out four assists. Both guards had seven or less points at half.

Fouls were a large part of the game, handcuffing the Mountaineers for the first part of the second half. Whistles were blown on Western fouls 29 times, nine more than its opponents.

When the lights started flashing for Western, the team went on a 15-2 run to bring the game within a pair. Beauchamp scored nine of the 15 points on the run. Adams converted a pair of jumpers, then Duggan dropped a trey to bring the game to a single deep shot. After Beauchamp scored another deep ball with 18 seconds left, Western went into the foul game, losing in the end by four.

Western will play Fort Lewis College tomorrow evening at 7 p.m.
