GUNNISON - Western State Colorado University versus Adams State University. The rivalry continues Friday evening when the men's basketball team takes on the Grizzlies at 7:30 p.m. in Paul Wright Gymnasium. Western will also host Fort Lewis College Saturday at 7 pm.
The Mountaineers (2-4, 1-1 RMAC) have been magical at home, defeating Colorado Mesa University on a buzzer-beater shot and putting up the second-most points in school history against Dine College. Away from home Western hasn't found a victory yet and struggle to shot well. This weekend's games will go a large way in the conference-standings, and can kick start a run into February with hopes to be playing in March.
Western has been led by
Ben Beauchamp, who is averaging 14 points per game and is shooting 34 percent from deep. Many of Beauchamp's points have come from the foul line, where he lead the team with 27 trips and 22 made baskets.
Beauchamp is joined by
Collin Smith from the bench, who is averaging nearly 13 points per game. Smith is shooting lights out, leading the team with 27 made shots.
Will Duggan is the final Mountaineer in double-digits, averaging 10 points per game and leading the team with 18 assists.Â
Another key force to Western's play is
Patrick Sniff. Sniff is averaging nearly 10 points per game, and leads the team with 35 total boards. Sniff is also the deadliest Mountaineer at the foul line, having not missed a free throw yet this season on 14 trips.
