VB | Western in ‘Win or Go Home’ battle towards end

GUNNISON – With two games remaining in the conference schedule things should be about shaped up, but that is not the case for Western State Colorado University women's volleyball team. Western has matches remaining Tuesday evening in Las Vegas, New Mexico against New Mexico Highlands University and hosting Adams State University for senior night Saturday. Saturday's match will feature six seniors playing their last regular season match in Paul Wright Gymnasium at 7 p.m.

Though there are only four different combinations that could arise from two matches, Western is looking at possibly hosting a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament game next Tuesday evening with the fourth seed, or not be in the tournament at all. Currently the Mountaineers are in a three-way tie with CSU-Pueblo and Adams State University for seventh place. They are a full game out of fifth and a game and a half out of fourth. Western owns the tiebreakers against the teams in fourth, fifth and sixth.

The Mountaineers (13-11, 9-7 RMAC) have won five of their last seven matches, with losses coming to the conference champion MSU-Denver and third place Colorado Mesa.  Through the stretch Western has been led by Tori Gaherty and Jordan Eatwell. Gaherty has hit 102 kills in the stretch, averaging more than 14 kills per match, while Eatwell has put down 94 kills in that time and is on a streak of 11 matches featuring double-digit kill numbers.

The other key factor for the Mountaineers is libero Amanda Maestas. The senior from Aurora, Colorado, is playing at a top level, averaging more than 20 digs per match. In seven matches she has broken the career-digs record, broke the school record in digs in a four-set match, and led the team in serving with eight aces.

With close to 1,000 possible outcomes surrounding the six teams fighting for five spots, the only one the Mountaineers know is with two wins they are in for certain.
