VB | Mountaineers send Mountain Lions packing

GUNNISON – A second half domination and a school record pushed Western State Colorado University women's volleyball team over the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs in four sets (25-19, 15-25, 25-16, 25-23) Friday evening in Paul Wright Gymnasium. The Mountaineers look for the opportunity to show the conference and the region what they can do, as they go up against MSU-Denver. With the win over Colorado Mesa tonight, MSU-Denver clinched the 2016 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season title.

The match was a highly defensive battle, as each team had seven total block and more than 80 digs. Western won the dig battle, as the team rallied around their libero Amanda Maestas. Maestas tied her career-high with 31 digs, breaking the school record in four-set digs by one.

Tori Gaherty brought home the win for Western, dropping nine of her team-high 14 kills in the final two sets. She was joined by Molly Hothan with a dozen kills and a match-high .360 hitting percentage and Jordan Eatwell with 11. Setter Allison Walker came in for 39 assists and a block.

Also for Western, Caiden Rexius and Jordan Eatwell had 18 and 10 digs apiece, while Hothan had four block assists.

With the win, Western moves from a two-way tie for seventh to a four-way tie for fifth. Western (13-10, 9-6 RMAC) are tied with Colorado Christian, UCCS and Adams State for fourth. The Mountaineers hold tiebreakers over Christian and UCCS, with a match still to be played against Adams State. Also, Western holds the tiebreaker over Regis in fourth place, should it come to it.
