GUNNISON, Colo. – Western State Colorado University women's basketball will be spending the weekend in Grand Junction, Colo. at the Holiday Inn – Airport Thanksgiving Classic. The Mountaineers will play two games in the Classic. One against Western New Mexico University at 1 p.m. on Friday and the other against Bethany College (Kan.) at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Fans can earn free admission to this weekend's Holiday Inn – Airport Thanksgiving Classic Basketball Games hosted by Colorado Mesa University with a donation of a winter clothing item. All items will be donated to Partners of Grand Junction.
Any new or used winter clothing item (coats, hats, mittens) can be donated at the game for a free general admission ticket. Fans will need to bring an item each day if they want free admission each day.
Western (0-2, 0-0 RMAC) opened the season last weekend in Pueblo, Colo. at the Al Kaly Shrine Classic. The Mountaineers fell to Tarleton State University and the University of Alaska – Fairbanks during the two-day tournament.
Harlie Williams leads the Mountaineers' scoring attack, averaging 8.5 points per game. Williams also leads the team in rebounding, averaging five per game, blocks, with two, and three-point field goals made with five.
Friday's opponent, WNMU (3-1, 0-0 LSC) will be familiar to the Mountaineers as the Lady Mustangs were members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference until this season. WNMU has won three games, with their only loss coming at the hands of Fort Lewis College.
The Lady Mustangs are averaging nearly 70 points per game and have three players averaging double digits in scoring.
On Saturday Western will face Bethany College (0-7, 0-3 KCAC), an NAIA school from Kansas. The Swedes enter the weekend winless and will face Colorado Mesa University on Friday.
Tehya Peters is the Swedes' leading scorer, averaging 13.71 points per game.
Following both of the Western's women's basketball games, the Western men will take the court in Grand Junction.
