GUNNISON, Colo. - Western State Colorado University came back from a 2-0 deficit and pulled within one goal, 3-2 against UC - Colorado Springs on Sunday. Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, the final goal came in the 90th minute. The Mountain Lions held on for the final 23 seconds to secure a 3-2 win.
UCCS (2-8, 2-4 RMAC) got out to a 2-0 start with two goals from Michaela Mansfield in the first 14 minutes of play.
Western (4-6-1, 2-4 RMAC) came out of the halftime break and pulled within one goal after
Jessica Kresl netted her third goal of the season in the 49th minute.
Katie Desch provided the assist, crossing the ball from the left side.
Mansfield scored her third goal of the match, completing the hat trick in the 66th minute and putting the Mountain Lions ahead 3-2.
The Mountaineers continued to press the UCCS back line, outshooting the Mountain Lions 24-16 on Sunday.Â
Western broke through in the 90th minute, but time ran out in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup. Kateyln Mardeusz provided the goal for the Mountaineers.
Kresl led all players in shots, recording eight in the match.
Western will continue the home stand next Friday when they host Colorado Christian University at 3 p.m. on Gateway Field.
