WSOC | Skyhawks complete comeback against Mountaineers

GUNNISON, Colo. – Western State Colorado University women's soccer held a 1-0 lead over Fort Lewis College on Sunday for almost 26 minutes. Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, the Skyhawks were able to tie the match in the 67th minute, then score the game winning goal in the 83rd minute. Western fell 2-1 in the Sunday matinee matchup.
 
Western (4-5-1, 2-3 RMAC) opened the scoring in the 41st minute. Defender Kimberlee Bourelle notched her first career goal, scoring an unassisted goal to put Western ahead 1-0.
 
The Mountaineers went into halftime with a 1-0 lead. Western would hold that lead for the following 20 minutes, before FLC (5-4-1, 4-2 RMAC) tied the match 1-1. Courtney Riley scored the goal for the Skyhawks, her first goal of the season.
 
FLC's Adonia Apergis also scored her first goal of the season, scoring the game winning goal in the 83rd minute. Shayla Malecki assisted Apergis on the goal.
 
Of Western's five losses this season, opponents have scored the game winning goal in the 71st minute or later four times.
 
The Mountaineers outshot the Skyhawks 13-11, placing six shots on target. Western's Christa Lewis led all players in shots with five.
 
With six points in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, Western sits tied for ninth place in the conference standings. However, the Mountaineers are just three points, or one win, from fifth place CSU-Pueblo and Adams State University.
 
Western hosts UC-Colorado Springs this Sunday. It will be Western's second of four home matches in a row. Of the Mountaineers' seven remaining regular season matches five will be played in Gunnison at Gateway Field.
