GUNNISON, Colo. – With 3:51 remaining, Western State Colorado University women's basketball found themselves down five points with momentum on the side of New Mexico Highlands University. The Mountaineers rallied with a 10-0 run to close the game. Western defeated the Cowgirls 65-60 on Saturday.
Â
All 10 points down the stretch were scored by sophomore guard
Taylor Long (So., Moreno Valley, California). Long scored a team high 21 points, making 9-of-10 free throws. The sophomore was also one rebound short of a second consecutive double-double.
Â
Despite being down late in the game, Western (4-7, 2-7 RMAC) was ahead of NMHU (2-11, 0-9 RMAC) for much of the game. After outscoring the Cowgirls 22-14 in the first quarter, the Mountaineers took a 34-28 lead into halftime.
Â
Highlands turned things around in the third quarter and took a 49-46 lead into the fourth quarter. From there, the lead changed hands as both teams exchanged buckets. In the end, it would be the Mountaineers to make a late scoring charge.
Â
NMHU's Michelle Traynham led all players in scoring with 26 points.
Â
Western will stay in Gunnison for the next set of games. The Mountaineers host Black Hills State University and South Dakota School of Mines and Technology next weekend in Paul Wright Gym.
