MBB | Western State hosts New Mexico schools

GUNNISON – Western State Colorado University men's basketball team will take on Western New Mexico University and New Mexico Highlands University, Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m., respectfully.
 
The Mountaineers (2-11, 1-6 RMAC) have shot well as a team from beyond the arc at over 35 percent. Senior Danny Hopkins leads the starters with a 40 percent shooting from deep, followed by Ben Beauchamp at 39 percent. The two also lead the team in points, averaging more than 13 and 11 points, respectfully.
 
Defensively, Robert Romero leads the team with almost six boards per game. Hopkins is second on the team with more than five. Point guard Will Duggan leads the team with 20 total steals and 56 assists.
 
Highlands (7-6, 6-1 RMAC) is close to the top of the conference, led by Jonathon Mines. Mines is averaging 20 points per game, and is assisted by Marlon Johnson and Kendrick Nichols with 16 and 15 points per game, respectfully. The team shoots more than 38 percent from beyond the arc.
 
The Mustangs of Western N.M. remain winless (0-12, 0-7 RMAC) through a dozen games. Willie McCray leads the team with more than 11 points per game, and has a team-high 15 steals.
