GUNNISON, Colo. - In their second game of the season, Western State Colorado University women's soccer got their first win of the season. The Mountaineers defeated Texas A&M International University 2-0 in front of a home crowd at Gateway Field.
Western (1-1, 0-0 RMAC) wasted no time getting on the board as
Brianna Vega (Sr., Vallejo, California) put away her first goal of the season in the 17th minute. Vega scored her goal on the rebound after a shot by
Francesca Rand (So., Huntington Beach, California) came back off the post.
The Mountaineers dominated the pace of play, forcing TAMIU (0-2, 0-0 Heartland) to play much of the first half in their defense third. Western outshot the Dustdevils 14-6 in the first.
While it turned out Vega's goal was the game winner, the Mountaineers added another late in the first half. This time it was forward
Jennifer Kahle (So., Colorado Springs, Colorado) notching her first goal of the season. Kahle scored after
Sophie Fear (Fr., Boulder, Colorado) led the forward with a beautifully timed passed in the 35th minute.
Picking up another shutout victory was keeper
Meghan Jedrzejewski (Sr., Longmont, Colorado). The senior made nine saves in order to earn the victory.
The Mountaineers will be back on the field next Thursday when they host Lubbock Christian University at 3 p.m. on Gateway Field.
