GUNNISON, Colo. - For the second time in less than a week, Western State Colorado University women's soccer earned a victory on Gateway Field. This time, the Mountaineers defeated Lubbock Christian University 5-0. It was also the second shutout in as many matches. Western's five goals is the second highest scoring output in the program's history.
Western (2-1, 0-0 RMAC) got out to a fast start, scoring after just 1:40 into the match. Midfielder
Samantha Braun (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah) knocked the ball into the net from just inside the penalty box after
Sadie Stark (Sr., Milliken, Colorado) played a through ball past the LCU defender.
The scoring for Western didn't stop there as they managed to put two more goals away before the half. Freshman
Ingrid Alvarez (Fr., Aurora, Colorado) notched her first career goal in the 25th minute after being setup by freshman
Sophie Fear (Fr., Boulder, Colorado).
Elyza Montano (Sr., El Sobrante, California) followed with a goal of her own just three minutes later with a shot from 18-yards out.
Playing the best soccer of the young season, the Mountaineers stellar defense kept the ball in the LCU (1-1-1, 0-0 Heartland) defensive third for nearly all of the first half. Western's defense allowed only one LCU shot in the first 45 minutes. The Mountaineers have yet to allow a first half goal this season.
Samantha Taylor (So., Centennial, Colorado) and
Jennifer Kahle (So., Colorado Springs, Colorado) each added a goal in the second half. Taylor scored her first career goal at the 47th minute and Kahle scored her second goal of the season in the 76th.
The Mountaineers will return to the pitch on Sunday. Western will host Midwestern State University at 1 p.m. on Gateway Field.Â
