LAS VEGAS, N.M. - Freshman
Taylor Frick (Fr., Gilbert, Arizona) scored her first career goal, but Western State Colorado University women's soccer fell to New Mexico Highlands University 2-1 on Sunday.
Western (4-4-1, 2-3 RMAC) was forced to play from behind for most of the match as NMHU (4-3-1, 2-1-1 RMAC) got on the board first. The Cowgirls found the back of the net twice in the first half. NMHU scored their first goal in the 30th minute and then notched another 11 minutes later.
Coming out of halftime, the Mountaineers intensified their offense and put the Cowgirls under pressure. After being outshot 7-4 in the first half, Western outshot NMHU 9-3 in the second stanza.
The offensive pressure paid-off for Western in the 70th minute when Frick took a pass from
Jennifer Kahle (So., Colorado Springs, Colorado) and slid it past the keeper. Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, they were unable to find a match-tying goal in the final 20 minutes.
Kahle led the match with three shots on net and tied NMHU's Danielle Acuna for most shots in the match with three.
The Mountaineers are currently tied for sixth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings. Western will continue their RMAC schedule next weekend, travelling to Fort Lewis College on Friday and Adams State University on Sunday.
