GUNNISON, Colo. - Western State Colorado University women's soccer earned their second victory of the season over a ranked opponent Wednesday night. The Mountaineers upset No. 22 UC-Colorado Springs 1-0 on the road, earning their second Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) win of the season.
"It was a great team effort and I was happy to see our team bounce back from Sunday's game," Head Coach
Jeremy Clevenger said. "Our defense did a great job shutting them out and our offense was clicking and very dangerous."
After defeating then ranked No. 22 Metro State University Denver last Friday, Western (4-2-1, 2-1 RMAC) received votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll. However, the Mountaineers still came in as underdogs against No. 22 UC-Colorado Springs (4-2, 1-1-1 RMAC).
The Mountaineers didn't waste time against the Mountain Lions, scoring the game winning goal in the ninth minute. Western's
Elyza Montano (Sr., El Sobrante, California) scored her third goal of the season and second in as many matches. Montano was assisted on the play by
Sadie Stark (Sr., Milliken, Colorado), who earned her RMAC leading third assist of the season.Â
Although Western was outshot 18-10 in the match, the Mountaineers made the most of their shot opportunities putting 50 percent of their shots on net. Western's defense forced UC-Colorado Springs to put just 27.8 percent of their shots on net.Â
Goalie
Meghan Jedrzejewski (Sr., Longmont, Colorado) earned her fourth shutout of the season, making five saves and securing the fourth victory of the season for Western.
A physical match, three yellow cards were awarded in the second half. All went against the Mountain Lions.
UC-Colorado Springs' Brooke Tominello led the game in shot attempts with six.
Western is currently ranked second in the RMAC standings after the first three matches of the season and will continue the season this Friday against CSU-Pueblo on the road.
