GUNNISON, Colo. - After a scoreless first half, Western State Colorado University women's soccer fell behind 2-0 in the second half. The Mountaineer offense went into overdrive and got one of those goals back, but ultimately fell to Regis University 3-1 on Sunday.
Western (3-2-1, 1-1 RMAC) was coming off a 1-0 victory over No. 22 Metro State University Denver on Friday when they welcomed Regis (4-2, 1-1 RMAC) to Gateway Field on Sunday. After an emotional win, the Mountaineers started a little slow, but managed to weather the storm and take a 0-0 draw into halftime. The Rangers outshot Western 7-2 in the first half.
However, Regis scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half, forcing Western to change formation and become more offensive oriented in order to mount a comeback. After the changes, Western took control of the match and put consistent pressure on the Regis back line.
Shot after shot flew from Western attackers. The Mountaineers finally broke through in the 78th minute when
Elyza Montano (Sr., El Sobrante, California) scored her second goal of the season on a rebound shot after Sam Braun (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah) hit the crossbar on her shot attempt.
The Mountaineers continued to put pressure on the Rangers as they looked for an equalizer. Unfortunately with the Mountaineers focused on attacking, Regis scored on a counter attack to put the match away, 3-1.
Regis' Sade Akindele scored twice, including the game winner in the 55th minute. Mickie Piechowski scored the first goal for the Rangers in the 47th minute.
Montano and Braun each had three shots for the Mountaineers, while Regis' Sid Otto led her team with three shots.
Western outshot the Rangers 12-10 in the second half.
The Mountaineers will play their first road matches of the season next week. Western will face UC-Colorado Springs on Wednesday, Sept. 23 before travelling to CSU-Pueblo on Friday and New Mexico Highlands University on Sunday.
