GUNNISON, Colo. - It took a complete team effort by Western State Colorado University women's soccer to upset No. 12 Metro State University Denver. However, that's exactly what the Mountaineers did on Saturday, defeating the nationally ranked Road Runners 1-0 at home.
Western (3-1-1, 1-0 RMAC) defeated MSU Denver (3-2, 0-1 RMAC) in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener on Saturday. It was the first time in program history the Mountaineers defeated the Road Runners.Â
Western's Sam Braun (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah) scored the game winner in the 65th minute after the ball bounced around the box. Braun's second goal of the season was assisted by
Sadie Stark (Sr., Milliken, Colorado), her second assist of the season.
While Braun and Stark helped provide the offense, Western's defense earned their third shutout of the season. Goalie
Meghan Jedrzejewski (Sr., Longmont, Colorado) saved 12 shots for the second consecutive match, which is the second most saves in Western history.
Despite being outshot 22-15 - 12-6 shots on goal - the Mountaineers had most of the better opportunities in the match.Â
MSU Denver's Regina Banks led the match in shots with seven and shots on goal with four.
Ingrid Alvarez (Fr., Aurora, Colorado) paced the way for Western with four shots and three shots on goal.
The Mountaineers will look to keep their four match unbeaten streak alive when they face RMAC opponent Regis University on Sunday at 1 p.m. on Gateway Field.
