GUNNISON, Colo. – The Western State Colorado University women's basketball team made a late push to get within six points but Black Hills State was able to hang on and come away with a 55-49 victory Saturday night at Paul Wright Gym.

Jade McIntosh (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the Mountaineers (4-17, 3-14 RMAC) with 13 points while Stephanie Williams (R-Fr., Cerritos, Calif.) also notched double figures with 11. Sydnie Lengyel (So., Tempe, Ariz.) pulled down a team-high 10 boards for the Mountaineers.

Western grabbed an early 7-0 advantage in the first 3:25 of the game before Remi Wientjes recorded the first five points in a 10-0 BHSU (12-9, 10-7 RMAC) run.

McIntosh ended the Western drought with a basket before Harlie Williams (So., Norwood, Colo.) connected from deep to give the Mountaineers a 12-10 advantage with 12:01 remaining in the first.

BHSU regained the lead on the ensuing possession with a trey from Bailey Kusser, and stretched its lead to 21-14 before a putback by Harlie Williams ended the BHSU spurt with less than eight minutes to play in the period.

Mountaineer turnovers and a couple of threes by the Yellow Jackets late in the first period helped BHSU increase its lead to take a 35-24 advantage into the break.

The Yellow Jackets began the second half with a 6-1 run, taking a 41-25 lead three minutes into the period.

With BHSU up 49-31, Western put together a 9-0 run in a span of 2:22 that was capped off by a Madison Cruse (R-Fr., Fullerton, Calif.) three to make it a nine-point game.

The Yellow Jackets added five quick points to regain the momentum but a trey by McIntosh began a 7-0 run for the Mountaineers to make it 54-47 with 2:32 remaining.

A McIntosh jumper with 33 seconds to play put the score at 55-49, but Western was unable to pull any closer as the Yellow Jackets recorded the win.

Taylor Trohkimoinen led BHSU with 12 points while Kusser and Gabby Haefs each scored eight.

Western begins a two-game road trip Friday when the Mountaineers travel to Western New Mexico for a 5:30 p.m. tip in Silver City.
