SILVER CITY, N.M. - Western State Colorado University women's basketball was unable to climb back into Friday night's game against Western New Mexico University after getting down nine points in the first half. The WNMU Lady Mustangs defeated the Mountaineers 58-44.
Western (4-18, 3-15 RMAC) was behind five points after the first 2:15. However, the Mountaineers tried to change the course of the game, taking a three-point lead with 12:17 remaining in the first half. In front of their home crowd, the Lady Mustangs would then go on a 12-0 run over the next 7:18 to take a nine point lead. WNMU (13-9, 10-8 RMAC) held onto that lead, taking a 28-19 lead into the break.
After being shutout in the first half, Western's leading scorer
Jade McIntosh (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colorado) tried to bring the Mountaineers back to life in the second. McIntosh scored nine points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field in the second half. However, it wasn't enough for the Mountaineers to challenge WNMU's lead, as the Lady Mustangs cruised to a home conference victory.
Despite losing the game, Western defeated WNMU on the glass, grabbing 44 rebounds to the Lady Mustangs' 35. Western's
Stephanie Williams (RFr., Cerritos, Calif.) was a large part of the team's rebounding success, as she grabbed 11 rebounds. Williams also scored 10 points, recording her second career double-double and second in the past three games.
Sydnie Lengyel (So., Tempe, Ariz.) led Western in scoring with 12 points. The forward made 5-of-10 field goals, while also recording seven rebounds.
WNMU's Stephanie Moore led all players in scoring with 14 points.
The Mountaineers will next travel across the state of New Mexico for a Saturday matchup against New Mexico Highlands University.
