GUNNISON, Colo. – An 18-1 run for Chadron State to begin the game carried the Eagles to a 70-60 win over the Western State Colorado University women's basketball team Friday night at Paul Wright Gym. Jade McIntosh (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) paced the Mountaineers (4-16, 3-13 RMAC) with 18 points while pulling down six boards.
Sydnie Lengyel (So., Tempe, Ariz.) totaled 10 points and a season-high 13 boards for her first double-double of the season while
Stephanie Williams (R-Fr., Cerritos, Calif.) added 10 points and 10 boards for her first career double-double.
Sadie Stroup (So. Foresthill, Calif.) also notched double figures with 10 points.
Turnovers and cold shooting helped CSC take a sizeable lead on the Mountaineers in the first 10 minutes of the game. Western started 0-of-11 from the field before McIntosh knocked down the first basket for the Mountaineers at the 10:52 mark to make it 18-3 in favor of the Eagles.
A three-pointer by
Harlie Williams (So., Norwood, Colo.) began a 12-1 run for the Mountaineers with 8:24 to play in the first half. Baskets by Stroup and McIntosh helped Western climb back into the game before
Harlie Williams connected on two free throws and
Stephanie Williams added a bucket to make it 25-16 with five minutes to play in the half.
Western pulled within eight in the final minutes of the period but CSC was able to take a 35-22 lead into the break after a few Mountaineer turnovers.
The Mountaineers began the second half on a 9-2 run with six points coming from McIntosh to make it 37-31 2:20 into the period.
A three-point play by Lengyel pulled Western within five at 39-34 but the Eagles answered with a 5-0 spurt to take a 44-34 advantage with 15 minutes to play.
The Eagles continued to maintain a double-digit lead through a majority of the second half with Western only able to trim its deficit down to nine as CSC pulled out a 70-60 victory.
Stephanie Knowles led the Eagles (7-13, 7-9 RMAC) with 21 points and seven steals while Maka Daysh added 16 points and eight rebounds. Kayla Matthews also hit double figures with 11 points.
The Mountaineers return to action Saturday night at 5:30 p.m. when they host Black Hills State at Paul Wright Gym.
