GUNNISON, Colo. – The Western State Colorado University men's and women's basketball teams return to Paul Wright Gym for a Saturday doubleheader against Colorado Mesa beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the women's game.
Last weekend, the Western men (4-19, 3-16 RMAC) defeated Western New Mexico, 66-58, before dropping a 78-65 decision to New Mexico Highlands. On the women's side, the Mountaineers (4-19, 3-16 RMAC) came up short in both weekend matchups, falling to Western New Mexico, 58-44, and New Mexico Highlands, 85-72.
Jade McIntosh (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) continues to lead the Mountaineers with 12.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per game this season. McIntosh ranks 15
th in scoring and ninth in rebounding in the RMAC.
The CMU women (19-4, 16-3 RMAC) enter Saturday's contest first in the RMAC standings. Sophomore guard Erin Reichle is third in the league with 18.2 points while topping the conference in free throw percentage (92.9) and three-pointers per game (3.0). Senior forward Leanndra Gilbert also averages double figures for the Mavericks with 10.6 points. Gilbert is second in the RMAC with 8.1 boards and fourth with 1.6 blocks per game.
For the men,
Mason Biddle (Sr., Riverside, Calif.) has scored in double figures in all but one game this season for the Mountaineers. Biddle is averaging 18.1 points for sixth in the league while ranking fifth in assists with 4.5 per game.
Danny Hopkins (Jr., Riverside, Calif.) and
Devin Kastrup (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) are second and third for the Mountaineers in scoring with Hopkins averaging 12.2 points while Kastrup is close behind with 12.0 points per game.
The Mavericks (18-7, 13-6 RMAC) have clinched a spot in the RMAC Tournament next month, currently sitting in fifth place in the league. CMU is led by junior post Ryan Stephan, who is averaging 25.1 points and 8.2 rebounds for second in the conference.
Following Saturday's battle with the Mavericks, the Mountaineers will close out the season the following weekend at home with two doubleheaders Friday and Saturday beginning at 5:30 p.m. Western will open the final weekend of play against Fort Lewis College before facing Adams State.
