GUNNISON, Colo. - It was a fast paced match on Friday in Gunnison, Colorado. The Metro State University Denver Roadrunners and Western State Colorado University Mountaineers squared off in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference clash. The Roadrunners proved to be too much for Western on Friday night, as MSU Denver took a 3-0 win.

Western (12-15, 9-7 RMAC) were winners of the previous six matches played in Paul Wright Gym. However, MSU Denver (17-9, 13-3 RMAC) snapped that streak with a barrage of hitting. The Roadrunners had three players score double-figure kills, with Michaela Smith's 12 leading the way.

With the loss, and wins by CSU-Pueblo and Adams State University, the Mountaineers lead those two teams by one match in the RMAC standings. Western currently sits seventh in the conference standings, with the top eight teams making the playoffs. However, CSU-Pueblo's 3-0 win over UC-Colorado Springs on Friday night puts the Mountaineers within one match of the Mountain Lions in sixth place. UC-Colorado Springs and Western will go head-to-head Saturday night in Gunnison.

Leading the Mountaineers in attacking on Friday night was senior Taylor Castillo (Sr., Kiowa, Colorado). Castillo recorded seven kills in the match.

Saturday's match against UC-Colorado Springs at 7 p.m. is Western's Senior Night. Four Mountaineer seniors will play their final match on Paul Wright Gym and will be honored prior to the start of the match.
