GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Western State Colorado University women's basketball earned a 70-62 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State University on Saturday at the Colorado Mesa University Holiday Inn - Airport Classic tournament. The Mountaineers made 10 three-point field goals to earn their second victory of the season and remain undefeated.
Western (2-0, 0-0 RMAC) got out to a fast start against OPSU (0-5, 0-0 Heartland). The Mountaineers scored 19 points and held the Aggies to five points through quarter number one. Western matched their 19 first quarter points with 19 in the second to take a 38-20 halftime lead. Through the first two quarters, Western was shooting 50 percent (15-of-30) from the field and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from beyond the arc.
Taylor Long (So., Moreno Valley, California) led the Mountaineers in scoring. Long recorded 14 of her game high 21 points in the first half.
Sadie Stroup (Jr., Foresthill, California) contributed 18 points for Western, making 4-of-9 three-pointers.
OPSU came out of the half and cut Western's lead to six points heading into the fourth quarter, 48-42. After a fourth quarter opening layup cut the lead to only four points, Western once again took control.
The Mountaineers' largest lead of the game was 21 points at the 1:45 mark in the second quarter.
Western forward
Sydnie Lengyel (Jr., Tempe, Arizona) led the team in rebounds with 10. Lengyel also recorded seven points on Saturday.
Western went 10-for-27 (37 percent) from beyond the arc. Only 20 of Western's 70 points came from inside the paint.
Kietta Saunders led the Aggies in scoring with 15 points.
Western had all nine players that appeared in the game reach the scoring column.
The Mountaineers will host CSU-Pueblo in their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and home opener next Saturday. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. in Paul Wright Gym.
