WSOC | Wild finish ends with a tie for Western and Westminster

GUNNISON, Colo. - Two goals were scored in the final 10 minutes of regulation as Western State Colorado University and Westminster College played to a draw Friday. Western and Westminster scored two goals each, both earning a valuable conference point.

Western (5-5-2, 2-4-1 RMAC) was forced to play from behind after Westminster (6-4-1, 3-3-1 RMAC) scored the first goal of the match in the 43rd minute. Madeline Orr scored the goal for Griffins from 35 yards out, along the left sideline.

Senior midfielder Elyza Montano (Sr., El Sobrante, California) scored the equalizer for the Mountaineers in the 59th minute after Tanisha Anderson (Sr., Arvada, Colorado) played her through.

With the match winding down, the Mountaineers pressed forward. With 10 seconds remaining, outside midfielder Jessica Kresl (So., Aztec, New Mexico) took the ball down the right side. Kresl crossed the ball to the near post and found Sam Braun (Sr., Salt Lake City, Utah), who headed it past the keeper. Braun's goal looked like it would be the game winner as only 10 seconds remained.

The Griffins took the ball down the field but Western keeper Meghan Jedrzejewski (Sr., Longmont, Colorado) grabbed the ball as seconds slipped off the clock. A Westminster player stood in front of Jedrzejewski as she attempted to get rid of the ball. Officials stopped the clock with two seconds remaining and controversially gave Jedrzejewski a red card, and in turn the Griffins were awarded a penalty kick. Scoring the penalty kick as time expired forced overtime.

Neither team was able to break the tie in overtime and the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

The Mountaineers will face another Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponent Sunday, when they host Colorado Mesa University at 1 p.m. on Gateway Field.
