LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Western State Colorado University volleyball team swept Colorado Christian University (25-15, 25-21, 27-25) Friday evening in Lakewood. The Mountaineers look to repeat their upset of No. 19-ranked Colorado School of Mines tomorrow evening in Golden. Western State handed Mines its first conference loss of the season earlier this year.
Western State (10-13, 7-5 RMAC) was firing on all cylinders tonight, hitting a season-best .292 as a team. The Mountaineers also held the Cougars (9-12, 5-7 RMAC) to a .091 hitting percentage, making that seven teams they have held under .100 this season. Western also dominated the net, recording eight total blocks compared to Christian's three.
Tori Gaherty led the Mountaineers for the fourth straight match, putting down a dozen kills with a season-high .393 hitting percentage.
Molly Hothan added eight, while
Taylor Castillo chipped in seven kills.
Allison Walker pushed her streak of 30 assists to four games with 32 tonight. She also had a team-high 10 digs.
Defensively,
Avery Burkholder led the wall for the Mountaineers with four blocks assists. Castillo added three block assists.
Amanda Maestas had nine digs on the match.
The Mountaineers four game winning streak is the first since 2003, also the last year the team made the RMAC Tournament. Western State pushed out one close opponent tonight, solidifying its seventh place spot in the conference. With CSU-Pueblo losing tonight, Adams State moves into eighth with an even 6-6 conference record. The Mountaineers take on the Grizzlies next Saturday at home at 7 p.m.
