GUNNISON, Colo. - Western State Colorado University men's and women's basketball teams will play their final games of 2014 this weekend. The Mountaineers will travel to Adams State University on Saturday before heading over Wolf Creek Pass to face the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis College. The women are scheduled to face Adams State at 5 p.m. on Saturday and Fort Lewis at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The men will start their against Adams State at 7 p.m. on Saturday and 5 p.m. on Sunday against Fort Lewis.
Saturday will mark the 79th meeting between rivals Adams State and Western State women's basketball. The Mountaineers and Grizzlies last met in the final game of 2013-14's campaign. Western came away victorious, 49-40, and lead the series 42-36.
Jade McIntosh (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colorado) leads the Mountaineer scoring attack. Averaging 13.1 points per game, McIntosh is tied with Colorado Christian University's Taylor Torres for the 12th highest scoring average in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Western (3-5, 2-2 RMAC) is coming off two RMAC victories last weekend. The Mountaineers defeated New Mexico Highlands University 76-66 in double overtime, before earning a 75-64 win over Western New Mexico University. With a 2-2 conference record, the Mountaineers currently sit tied for fifth place in the RMAC standings.
ASU (0-7, 0-3 RMAC) is still in search of their first win of the season. The Grizzlies are coming off a 46-71 loss to Fort Lewis College last weekend.
ASU's Mariah Gonzales averages 13.3 points per game to lead the Grizzlies.
On Sunday, the Mountaineers will face Fort Lewis (4-3, 1-2 RMAC) for the 75th time in program history. The Skyhawks lead the all-time series 48-26, and won the previous meeting 88-61 last season.
FLC's Mary Brinton leads the Skyhawks, averaging 12.3 points per game.
The Skyhawks will host Colorado Mesa University on Friday before welcoming the Mountaineers.
The Western men will face Adams State for the 180th time in program history. ASU leads the series 100-79 and won the last meeting 95-84.
Mason Biddle (Sr., Riverside, California) is Western's leading scorer, averaging 17.8 points per game. Biddle's scoring average is eighth best in the RMAC.
Western (2-6, 1-3 RMAC) is coming off a 63-59 win against Western New Mexico University last Saturday. The Mountaineers are tied for ninth place in the RMAC standings.
ASU (3-3, 0-3 RMAC) is searching for the first conference win of 2014-15. The Grizzlies lost last Saturday's matchup to Fort Lewis College 87-73.
ASU's leading scorer Shakir Smith averages 16.8 points per game, which ranks ninth best in the RMAC.
Sunday will be the 111th meeting between the Mountaineers and Fort Lewis (7-2, 2-1 RMAC). FLC leads the series 69-41, and won the last meeting 76-62.
Alex Herrera averages 20.7 points per game for Fort Lewis. Herrera's scoring average is third best in the RMAC.
