GUNNISON, Colo. - It was a long time coming for the Western State Colorado University volleyball team, but the Mountaineers finally broke through and grabbed a win against Western New Mexico University. Western swept the Lady Mustangs in three sets (25-16, 26-24, 25-17).
With Paul Wright Gym on Western's side Friday night, the Mountaineers (1-20, 1-16 RMAC) dominated almost every facet of the match.
In the first set, Western and WNMU (10-14, 7-10 RMAC) split the first eight points. The Mountaineers then proceeded to take the set over, going on a 12-2 run. Western took the first set 25-16.
While the Mountaineers had won the first set multiple times this season, the second set always seemed to elude Western's grasp.
Much like the first set, Western controlled the pace and were up big late in the set, 23-14. The Mountaineers only needed two points to head into the third set with a 2-0 lead. However, the Lady Mustangs had other ideas and charged back to tie the match at 24 points. After gaining a one point lead on an error, the Mountaineers had the serve.
Tori Gaherty (So., Colorado Springs, Colorado) placed the ball over the net and WNMU was unable to handle the serve, giving Western it's first two set lead of the season.
Western recorded eight service aces on Friday night.
With confidence restored on the Mountaineer side, Western rolled in the third set, 25-17.
Western's
Jordan Eatwell (Fr., Fruita, Colorado) led all players with 15 kills. Teammate
Allison Walker (So., Aurora, Colorado) led all players with 37 assists in the match.
Friday night's win ended a 37 match winless streak against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents. The last conference victory for the Mountaineers came on Nov. 3, 2012.
Western will end the 2014 season Saturday night when they host New Mexico Highlands University in Paul Wright Gym. The final match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
