GUNNISON, Colo. - The 2014 season will come to a close in Gunnison for the Western State Colorado University volleyball team this weekend. The Mountaineers will host Western New Mexico University on Friday before the final match of the season against New Mexico Highlands University on Saturday. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Paul Wright Gym.
Western (0-20, 0-16 RMAC) will bid farewell to seniors
Sara Larson (Sr., Windsor, Colorado) and
Morgan Stansberry (Sr., Olathe, Colorado) on Saturday. The two seniors have been a vital part of Western's squad for the past four years. The leadership these seniors bring on and off the court will be difficult to replicate.
The Mountaineers enter the weekend having lost to rival Adams State University last Saturday 0-3. Western will look to earn two victories over the weekend to send their seniors off in a winning fashion.
Western New Mexico University (10-13, 7-9 RMAC) are coming off a 3-0 loss at the hands of Colorado Mesa University last weekend. The Lady Mustangs sit in a tie for eighth place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings.
The last time WNMU and Western State met, the Mountaineers pushed the Lady Mustangs to five sets, but fell just short, losing 3-2.
NMHU (11-16, 5-11 RMAC) is coming off a 3-1 non-conference win over Eastern New Mexico University on Tuesday. The Cowgirls are 10th in the RMAC with two matches remaining in the regular season. NMHU will face CSU-Pueblo on Friday before traveling to Gunnison.
Last month, the Mountaineers fell to the Cowgirls 1-3 in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
