GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Special teams play proved to be the difference Saturday as the Western State Colorado University Mountaineers faced the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks.  CMU won the game in Grand Junction, Colorado by a score of 31-23.

Western (4-7, 3-6 RMAC) led for the majority of the game and had a 17-3 lead with 3:55 remaining in the third quarter.  This lead was quickly diminished as CMU (6-5, 5-4 RMAC) scored on a 47-yard touchdown reception to cut the lead to seven points with 3:24 remaining in the third.

The Mavericks quickly got the ball back and marched down the field.  However, a stalwart Mountaineer defense held CMU to a field goal opportunity.  A botched snap on the field goal attempt sent the Mavericks scrambling as the place holder scooped the ball, ran to the right and tossed the ball into the end zone.  The ball was caught by a CMU player and the game was tied at 17 points.

Western then attempted to return the Mavericks' kickoff, only to fumble on the return.  CMU ran the fumble into the end zone, taking their first lead of the game at 24-17.

The Mountaineers would come back and score on their next possession, as Brett Arrivey (Jr., Woodinville, Washington) connected with Kyle Adkins (So., Woodinville, Washington) for a 38-yard touchdown catch.  CMU blocked the extra point attempt to maintain a one point lead, 24-23.

Arrivey threw for 285 yards and two scores Saturday.

With 4:10 left in the game, Western's defense again forced a CMU punt, looking to drive down the field and take the lead.  However, the punt was muffed and CMU recovered in the end zone for another special teams score.

Western's Austin Ekeler (So., Eaton, Colorado) ran for 155 yards on Saturday, setting the Western single season rushing record with 1,676 yards on the ground.  Ekeler surpassed Chaumont Bouknight who set the record in 2003 with 1,543 yards.

Cole Waliczek (Sr., Thornton, Colorado) led the Mountaineers in tackles, recording eight.

As a team, Western outgained CMU 482 yards to 278.
