DENVER, Colo. - Western State Colorado University women's soccer suffered a slight setback to their conference playoff chances on Friday. The Mountaineers fell to Metro State University Denver 2-1 on the road.
Western (6-6-5, 3-6-4 RMAC) looked like they would be able to squeeze out a point against the Roadrunners on Friday. However, in the 98th minute, MSU Denver (13-1-4, 10-0-4 RMAC) managed to get the ball in the box and Tess Hagenlock put it in the back of the net, giving the Roadrunners the 2-1 win.
Despite the loss, Western still remains in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Playoff race. New Mexico Highlands University did the Mountaineers a favor by defeating UC-Colorado Springs on Friday evening. In order for Western to make it into the playoffs, the Mountaineers will need to defeat Colorado Christian University on Sunday and CSU-Pueblo will need to lose Friday night and draw with UC-Colorado Springs on Sunday.
Western's
Sadie Stark (Jr., Milliken, Colorado) scored the opening goal of the match. Stark received a pass from
Elyza Montano (Jr., El Sobrante, California) around the 10-yard box, making one move and shooting the ball past the Roadrunner goalkeeper. Stark's goal came in the 10th minute of the match.
MSU Denver pulled even with the Mountaineers just before half at the 31st minute.
Western travels across town to face Colorado Christian in the season finale on Sunday.
