LAKEWOOD, Colo. - The season ended on Sunday for the Western State Colorado University women's soccer team. In just the third year as a program, the Mountaineers had their most successful season to date. Despite losing to Colorado Christian University 2-1 on Sunday, the 2014 season will be one to remember.
After a scoreless first half, Western (6-7-5, 3-7-4 RMAC) finally broke through against CCU (4-11-3, 1-11-2 RMAC) in the 55th minute.
Tanisha Anderson (Jr., Arvada, Colorado) scored her first goal of the season for Western, striking the ball from 20 yards out.
The Mountaineers clung to a 1-0 lead until the 87 minute when the center official awarded the Cougars a penalty kick and sent Western goalkeeper
Meghan Jedrzejewski (Jr., Longmont, Colorado) off the pitch with a red card. CCU converted the penalty kick and added the game winner in the 90th minute.
Francesca Rand (Fr., Huntington Beach, California) ended the season as the Mountaineers' top goal scorer. Rand had five goals on the season, including three game winners.
Jedrzejewski ends the season with 87 saves and a .879 save percentage, which ranks second in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. In 18 games, Jedrzejewski recorded nine clean sheets.
Western's 23 points this season is a new record for the third year program.
