GUNNISON, Colo. - In the final home match of the 2014 season, Western State Colorado University women's soccer gave the home fans a show.  The Mountaineers dominated play on Sunday and finished the match with a 1-0 win over Colorado Christian University.

Western (6-4-4, 3-4-3 RMAC) earned their sixth victory of the season and picked up three critical conference points with the win.  Still in the hunt for a playoff spot, the Mountaineer women's soccer team is sitting in seventh place.  The top six Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams make the playoffs.

The Mountaineers applied early pressure on CCU's back line and finally broke through in the ninth minute.  Emily Burton (So., Aurora, Colorado) received the ball down the right side of the field and kicked a high cross into the box.  No one was able to get a body part on the ball and it bounced over defenders to the opposite side of the net.  Western's center midfielder Elyza Montano (Jr., El Sobrante, California) was there to collect the pass and deposit it in the back of the net, scoring her first goal of the season.

Western controlled the pace of play on exuded offensive dominance throughout the match.  The Mountaineers outshot CCU (3-8-2, 0-8-1 RMAC) 12-6, shooting three more than the Cougars in each half.

Sunday's win snaps a four-game losing streak for the Mountaineers.  After starting the season with five wins and four ties, Western has gone 1-4 since then.  However, with four matches remaining in the season, Western has a good chance to make the conference playoffs in just their third year as a program.

The Mountaineers will travel to Colorado Mesa University on Wednesday for a mid-week matchup.
