Keven John

Keven John enters his fourth season at the helm of the Mountaineer volleyball program in 2017.

During the 2016 season, John led Western to their first winning season in conference and overall play since 2006. The Mountaineers finished tied for eighth in the conference standings. John coached four Mountaineers to All-Conference honors his third year.

In his second season as the Mountaineer head coach, John sent his Mountaineer program to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament, the first time the program had been since 2003. The Mountaineers finished with a record of 13-17, with a 10-8 conference record. Western State earned the seventh seed for the conference tournament, and fell in three sets to Colorado Mesa in the first round. The Mountaineers began regular season conference play with a huge upset win over then No.12-ranked Colorado Mines, and backed it up by sweeping Colorado Christian out of playoff contention and upsetting the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs on senior night to secure a playoff berth.

John was named the RMAC Co-Coach of the Year, the second such award in school history. In addition, his team had four student-athletes named to the All-Conference team, tied for the most such selections since 2002. Western State led the conference in service aces, becoming one of the most feared serving teams in the area. Western tied records for most service aces in a set, and recorded the fourth-most aces in a season with 176. Additionally, libero Amanda Maestas broke the single-season digs record with 503.

John comes to Western by way of Snow College in Ephraim, Utah. Serving as head coach for three seasons, John had the Badgers finishing in the top 25 nationally in each of those years. At Snow, John totaled 11 all-conference athletes and won 13 matches over top-20 teams.

During the 2010-11 season, John was the head assistant at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. During this season, John’s duties included being the head defensive coach, running the strength program, organizing travel, scouting, recruiting and helping plan practices.

Before his time with Marietta, John was the varsity coach at Elbert High School in Colorado from 2006-09. During his four years, Elbert won three-consecutive league championships and one district championship while also making three-straight regional appearances.

Prior to his stint at Elbert, John spent three years as the varsity coach at Kiowa High School, and three more seasons as the junior varsity coach at Ponderosa High School in Parker, Colorado.

In 1997, John founded the Black Forest Volleyball Club in Englewood, Colorado. He worked as director and coach for eight years, sending 15 teams to the Junior Olympics.
