Shane Carwin vs. Brock Lesnar - UFC 116

Shane Carwin

Shane Carwin
graduated from Western State in 1999 with a degree in environmental technology after earning five All-America awards between the football field and wrestling mat. He was the 1999 Division II National Heavyweight Wrestling Champion after finishing runner-up in 1996 and 1997. He was a two-time All-American on the football field and was listed among the top linebackers in the 1998 NFL Draft. ESPN Draft Analyst Mel Kiper, Jr., reported for that draft: "Because of his size, exceptional strength and physical style, (Shane) basically just splatter guards in the box."

Carwin still holds Mountaineer wrestling records for career falls (60), season falls (20 set in 1997) and fastest fall (12 seconds set in 1999). His 161 tackles in 1996 is still a program football record when he became the first, and so far only, defensive player in RMAC history to earn the Player of the Year award.

On the football field, Carwin was an AFCA All-American in 1997 and earned second team honors in 1996 from Daktronics and Don Hansen Football Gazette. He was a three-time All-RMAC First Team selection and starter at middle linebacker, led the Mountaineers to three conference championships and two Division II playoff appearances. He led the North team in tackles at the 1998 Senior Bowl and the RMAC in tackles in 1996 and 1997. Carwin was part of a team that defeated the defending Division II national champion, Northern Colorado, 14-13 in 1997, before the Bears went on to repeat as national champions.

A back injury after the 1998 NFL Combine left Carwin undrafted, who decided to use his final year of eligibility in wrestling for the 1998-99 season.

Carwin went undefeated against Division II competition during his senior wrestling season of 1999 and finished fourth at the Las Vegas Invitational. He helped lead the Mountaineers to the 1997 RMAC wrestling championship and back-to-back Colorado Collegiate Championships in 1996 and 1997. Western State finished fourth at the national dual championships in 1997 and sixth at the NCAA national championships for the best national meet performance since 1990.

Carwin was inducted into the Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 in his first year of eligibility and into the RMAC Hall of Fame last Saturday. He was named to the conference All-Century Football Team last summer during the RMAC Centennial Celebration.

Apart from his Western State degree, Carwin also earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Colorado School of Mines. On top of his UFC career, he also works full-time as an engineer for the North Weld County Water District.
