The first mention of the Mountaineer Athletic Association can be traced back to the days of Head Football Coach O. Kay Dalton with the creation of the Century Club in the 1963-64 academic year. For just $100 each year, members could enjoy all the benefits or supporting the Mountaineers and the various sport programs that existed in the 1960s.
The Century Club maintained its current membership level - $100 a year – until inflation and the need for additional funds encouraged the creation of different membership levels. The Century Club was renamed the Mountaineer Century Club in the 1989-90 academic year, and then adopted the current Mountaineer Athletic Association title in 1995.
The MAA corporate partnership program started a year later to create additional means for businesses to become involved at a larger level and to create additional marketing avenues for those businesses. From the original 32 members in the 1996, the corporate partnership program has grown to 77 local and regional businesses and corporations in 2009-10.
In 2001, the Sam Boyd Crab Feed, Auction Dinner and Casino Night was started and has raised nearly $200,000 in nine years. More than $25,000 was raised for student-athletes last year, the third-highest total in the event’s history and the most since 2006.
Last year, more than $270,000 was raised for the scholarship needs of Western State College student-athletes with the support of 361 corporate and individual members. Among public NCAA Division II institutions with football, the Mountaineers continue to be among the national leaders in private support, in part from the generosity of the MAA members.
