Soccer Wins High-Scoring Tilt

GUNNISON, Colo.  Western Colorado evened its season record with a 5-4 non-conference win Saturday at Katy O. Rady Field over visiting Angelo State (Texas) University, surrendering two-goal leads twice but notching the final goal of the game off Natsuki Murakami's right foot in the 70th minute.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game-winner by Murakami began with a step-in from Ava Odil along the West touchline, intercepting a Rambelles pass and driving back into Western's attacking third.
  • Odil dished all the way across to Murakami on the right, who centered a pass to Jordan Welsh just above the arc. Welsh's initial pass was blocked, but she regained possession and pushed it to her right where Murakami collected it at the corner of the goal box and slotted a shot across and just inside the left post for the eventual game-winner.
  • Western, for the third time this season, scored the opening goal of the game, getting on the scoreboard in the 23rd with Adah Minikel-Lacocque's third goal of the season.
  • And the Mountaineers quickly extended their lead less than a minute later with a goal from Ohama Saya, also for her third of the season.
  • The two-goal advantage was cut in half in the 31st, though, when Juliana Garcia scored an unassisted goal for ASU, and she then found the equalizer three minutes later.
  • Just before the half, Western's Korinne Hayes notched her first of the season to allow Western to take a 3-2 lead into the halftime break.
  • Saya pushed the lead to two eight minutes into the second half with her second of the game, but the Rambelles responded again with consecutive goals, these two coming just 13 seconds apart within the 59th minute.
  • Odil's step-in to cause a turnover nine minutes later that set up Welsh and Murakami saved the Mountaineers, allowing them to pull back to .500 as they next move into Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
TURF NOTES
  • The teams would finish dead even in the scoresheet with 18 total shots apiece, with the Rambelles earning the slight edge in shots on goal, 8-7.
  • Western goalkeeper Ashlyn Fitzpatrick would earn the win after making four saves, while ASU's Claire Stermer would take the loss, with two saves and five goals against.
  • Angelo State's Garcia would earn a hat-trick during the loss, and for Western, Ohama scored twice, in just her second game with the Mountaineers.
  • Western's five goals were the most scored since a 5-0 win over New Mexico Highlands on Sept. 20, 2022
