Mountaineers Win Season Opener

CANYON, Texas  A second-half goal by Alyse Kavanaugh broke a tie that sent Western Colorado to a 2-1 non-conference victory in its season opener at host West Texas A&M on Thursday afternoon.

  • HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lady Buffaloes had banked on a shot volume approach, outshooting Western 14 to 6 overall, but Western relied on  shots conversion as all 6 shots were on frame, including the game-winner from Alyse Kavanaugh.
  • West Texas had just registered a shot wide of goal in the waning seconds of the 80th minute, setting up a goal kick from Addison Blick who pushed the opportunity downfield.
  • Soon after, Lauren Kindt found Kavanaugh who pasted a shot toward the top, center of the goal, hitting the netting after passing narrowly under the crossbar for the go-head tally at the 80:26 mark of the game.
  • Western played sound defense with that lead and finished off the final 10 minutes without allowing a Lady Buffs shot to secure the victory.
  • The Mountaineers had edged in front, 1-0, early, as Adah Minikel-Lacocque pushed a shot low center of the goal mouth in the 10th minute off a double assist by Natsuki Murakami and Ava Odil.
  • Ashlyn Fitzpatrick came up big for the Mountaineers 20 minutes later with back-to-back saves, but West Texas found its equalizer in the 39th, a marker that would soon send the two team into the halftime break knotted at 1-1.
  • TURF NOTES
  • West Texas finished with nine of its 14 shots on frame, but Fitzpatrick and Blick combined to hold the hosts to just that single goal. Fitzpatrick would make three saves in the first half, giving way to Blick coming out of the halftime break. Blick would earn the win making five saves to keep the Lady Buffs from celebrating any other goals during second-half action.
  • Jordan Welsh notched two of Western's six on goal, the first in the 63rd minute and the second in the 74th. West Texas goalkeeper Branciezca Blancaflor stopped both and would finish with four saves in taking the loss.
UP NEXT
The Mountaineers will make a stop in Portales, New Mexico, on their way home for a non-conference game Saturday at 11 a.m. against host Eastern New Mexico University.
