Mountaineers Hang on to RMAC Spot Despite Friday Outcome

GUNNISON, Colo.  Western Colorado dropped a 2-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference decision to visiting Regis University Friday afternoon, but despite the loss to the league-leading Rangers, the Mountaineers remained in a playoff spot, hanging in at eighth place in the conference standings.

Friday's game was the Mountaineers' Mental Health Awareness game, celebrated with the Rangers and in RMAC Mental Health Week as both teams warmed up in green t-shirts provided by sponsor RADical Hope.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Regis def. Western, 2-0
Records: Western 4-7-1 overall (2-5-1 RMAC), Regis 13-2 (9-0)
Location: Katy O. Rady Field, Gunnison, Colo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Under cloudless blue skies, Western pushed back against the Rangers through much of first half action, earning dangerous possession in the Mountaineers' attacking third several times.
  • Regis finally broke through Western's defense in the 27th minute, however, as Fernanda Rodriguez received a feed from Paul Igual that Rodriguez was able to push into the corner for a 1-0 lead.
  • The teams took that score into the halftime break, but Western came out of the midway break and immediately pressured on the attack.
  • Emily Gesick pushed one over the crossbar in the 47th, followed in the 57th by Western's most dangerous scoring opportunity in the game.
  • Off a free kick opportunity that was just right of the box, a lofted ball caromed around in the goal box, finally finding Adah Minikel-Lacocque in close. She one-touched a shot to the left side but a Rangers defender threw her body in front for a desperate save at the goal line to thwart the threat.
  • Two minutes later Rodriguez struck again, poking a shot into the left bottom corner off a 2-on-1 breakaway with Brooke Castillo.
  • The Mountaineers tried to push downfield but Regis played a little keep-away while pushing tentatively into its attacking third to control possession and allow just one more Western shot over the remainder of the game.
RADY TURF NOTES
  • The Mountaineers had chances during the game, getting off nine shots while limiting the league leaders to just 13 all game.
  • Western only trailed in shots on goal by a 5 to 3 count.
THEY SAID IT
