PUEBLO, Colo. Â Western Colorado got off to a fast start Thursday night in Massari Arena, getting pins in the first two weights then adding falls in two more bouts on the way to a 33-13 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win over host Colorado State Pueblo.
Devin Gomez, ranked eighth in The Open Mat individual rankings at 125 pounds, recorded three takedowns in the opening period of his match against Josh Jaramillo, lengthened his lead in the second, then early in the third scored a reversal and nearfall before finally pinning Jamamillo at the 5:45 mark of the match.
The lead doubled in just 18 seconds at 133 as
Zachary Bates' takedown and pin ended his bout before fans had sat down after the match introductions.
The ThunderWolves bit back with a pin at 141, but
Eyan Chavez responded for the Mountaineers with a dominant opening period, 12-3, before pinning his opponent with 45 seconds remaining in the second period.
The teams traded decisions at the next two weights, with Western getting three points from 11th-ranked
Vincent Cabral at 157, before the Mountaineers would take the final three matches of the night.
Hunter Richardson picked up a decision at 184, followed
Sage Harrison's third-period pin at 197 and
Riley Butt's narrow 5-4 decision at 285 to close out the dual.
